Buying material for the first time to make a head scarf?
I want something like this: http://www.headcovers.com/scarves/head-scarves/ which is basically just 30 inches of material cut in a square. I figured it would be cheaper to just buy my own cloth, and make it myself, but I've never attempted anything like this before. If I go to Wal-mart, they'll cut off whatever amount I ask for, but will the edges end up fraying? This is mainly for wearing around home - I just want something to cover my head (this house is so cold), to keep it warmer. I actually bought a packaged head scarf, but it was more in a rectangular shape, very long, and a thin satiny material. I'm thinking I'd rather have cotton, and at least 20 in. wide, 30 in. long to work with. Does that sound good?
Cotton is good. You could cut the square using pinking shears. This type of cut does not ravel. Another option is purchasing a roll of fusible web. Also found in the sewing section. It is about 1/2 in. wide and you use it to hem the cloth. You iron it between the scarf fabric and the turned up hem. No sewing involved.
