Did the cookie uniform in desert storm really suck that bad?
my friend told me when he was over there that he hated it because it looked like freaking cookies and that the black boots didn't help and he also said that it was worn only in operation desert storm after that it was never used again is this really how it was?
The "Chocolate Chip" BDUs that was used in Gulf War I weren't designed for use in that part of the Middle East. They were initially used for the 82nd Airbone to be used during their Sinai Peninsula Peacekeeping rotation (to make sure Egypt and Israel behave). The terrain there consisted of small pebbles, hence the "chocolate chips" on the uniform.
Because the focus had previously been on the European Theater and a possible invasion by the USSR/Warsaw Pact nations, the primary camo pattern was for use in a woodland enviroment. After Saddam invaded Kuwait, the US was caught short with a camo pattern that could be used in the desert, so the chocolate chip pattern was used, and later a three color desert pattern was used as well.
Like Ray said, many soldiers used the Woodland pattern the entire time, and that the NBC suits were still in Woodland as well. Of couse, the vehicles were green or camo then as well.
Afterwards, the 3rd Infantry Division was made the 911 force for the Middle East, and all of their vehicles were painted tan and desert BDUs were part of their soldier's regular uniform.
Of course, now it's more common to have vehicles painted tan than green or camo.
I had buddies who were in the 82nd back in the day ('80's) who actually gave me a pair of the pants that I used to wear. I never heard any complaints of the uniform.
